How not to become a Disney Dad
It is a well documented fact that children of broken marriages can often come off the worse in a post divorce scenario. They are filled with guilt and shame about the fate of their parent’s marriage and can go into a shell, if they aren’t handed led with love and affection. Unfortunately, this love and affection can sometimes spoil a child. It is a common phenomenon for dads in Texas to over compensate their children because of their divorce and become a Disney Dad.
A Disney Dad is someone who spoils their children with love and affection out of sheer guilt that they had a divorce. This article outlines some tips on how not to become a Disney Dad.
Set Limits and Follow Them
Yes divorce can be hard to take and yes there can be a number of different side effects of divorce, but that does not mean that you let your child do as they wish. As a father, it is your responsibility to set limits. A house without rules and limits can be hard to control, since the child has no real limitations to follow and can just about do anything. Even if you have gone through a divorce, you need to be clear with your child that the limits around the house haven’t changed.
Be the Adult in the House
Divorce is hard to take, whether you are a child or a spouse. Yet, it is no justification to retort to immature behavior. A house needs an adult to run smoothly as a father you need to realize you are that adult. Don’t just recognize that fact, make sure you act on it and show your child who the adult in the house is and who is in charge.
Let the Guilt Go Away
The guilt of going through a divorce can go away with time. Most fathers are able to spoil their children because they feel all that the child has gone through is their fault. What they must understand is that raising a spoilt child will only ruin that child’s future. To get rid of the guilt, make sure you treat them with care, love and affection but you shouldn’t be afraid to pin point their mistakes or hold them accountable for their mistakes.
Becoming a Disney Dad post divorce is easy; raising a strong, independent child is harder, as a father you need to strive for the latter.
